Aid to earthquake victims in Negros Oriental

February 11, 2012

To:     Silliman University Alumni and Friends @ San Diego

Hello Everyone,

It is heartbreaking news all over again what you hear and read this time concerning the earthquake that devastated the Central Visayas Region of the Philippines on Monday, Feb. 6th at a magnitude of 6.9 particularly in the towns of Guihulngan, La Libertad, Jimalalud, Tayasan and Ayungon. The quake was caused when an undersea fault shifted 44 miles north of Dumaguete, the capital of Negros Oriental province, about 400 miles southeast of Manila.

According to the latest news, the death toll rose to 41 with 67 people still missing and feared dead. The relief operation is being hampered due to collapsed bridges and damaged roads. Eleven bridges reportedly were damaged, three of them beyond repair. A boat carrying 100 sacks of rice capsized in the waters of Tanion Strait. Our BOD Chair, Amelia Buluran, has appealed for our participation to support the victims and also largely in part because the towns affected are the hometowns of our members - Precy, Chona and Laarni. Below are photos of the devastation. Imagine starting your life all over again. It takes another lifetime to rebuild.
